🇦🇺 #TourDownUnder | Stage 3 UPDATE - Not the ideal day with a very unfortunate fast crash for Australian champion Plapp in the final 10km. He managed to finish the stage but with lots of skin lost. Cyclist are TOUGH 🥺 More to follow.
Team Jayco AlUla came into the Tour Down Under with big ambitions but so far no results to show far. Caleb Ewan has not been able to take a meaningful result in the sprints, and now Luke Plapp is out of the GC run after crashing in the latter part of stage 3.
This was a crash that deeply affects the Australian team. Plapp was on the attack on stage 2 together with Jhonatan Narváez and seemed to be in form to contest the victory in the overall classification. Simon Yates did not show the same legs in the climbs that were presented, and so the Australian national champion seemed to be the team's best card.
That was until 13 kilometers to go. Plapp was involved in a crash together with a few riders from the Astana Qazaqstan Team. He was perhaps the worst affected from it. He got out with severe road rash throughout his body, and arrived at the finish almost 10 minutes down on stage winner Sam Welsford.
"Not the ideal day with a very unfortunate fast crash for Australian champion Plapp in the final 10km," the team wrote in it's social media. "He managed to finish the stage but with lots of skin lost. Cyclist are TOUGH."
