Fourth on stage 1, fifth on stage 2 and sixth on stage 3. Caleb Ewan showed great signs of promise ahead of the Tour Down Under, but he is not being able to bring the win he has been looking for.
“It was quite hectic and therefore very difficult to keep your position. Unfortunately, we lost Luke Plapp quite early, leaving only three riders left for the lead-out," Ewan said in a post-race interview. The loss of the Australian national champion cost Team Jayco AlUla some firepower. Perhaps it wouldn't have made the difference as BORA - hansgrohe had the overwhelmingly stronger leadout, but ultimately Ewan did not show much in the finale.
“I was in the Welsford wheel, but all the other sprinters wanted to be there too. It became so much chaos. When I wanted to start, I was a bit trapped. So it became an average sprint," he explained. At the end of the day, just a minor result on the day. One that was bad for the Australian team as Plapp dropped out of GC contention with a lot of road rash suffered.
“I'm a bit disappointed. I already felt better, but it's a shame that I couldn't ride my own sprint," Ewan concluded. Tomorrow stage may be his last opportunity to perform in this race, as the peloton faces it's final flat arrival, into Port Eliott.
