Concussion confirmed for Adam Yates following UAE Tour crash

One of cycling's most hotly debated subjects currently is the seriousness over the concussion protocol. Unfortunately, concussions are a frequent result of hard crashes and riders at times continue to race with it. This has been confirmed to be the case with Adam Yates today at the UAE Tour.

The Briton, a major favourite to win the race overall, crashed with just over 30 kilometers to go. At the moments that followed and after he got off the bike he didn't show signs of being healthy and fully stable. Questions were launched immediately over a possible concussion, and the fact that he was not checked after going down.

The news have in fact been confirmed. UAE Team Emirates' doctor Adrian Rotunno has confirmed the information himself: "Unfortunately Adam Yates has been diagnosed with a concussion after his crash today at the UAE Tour. He is stable with other superficial injuries."

"For the sake of Adam’s health, and as per concussion protocols, he was withdrawn from racing. He will need recovery, and the medical team will continue with neurological monitoring and rehab going forward."

This is set to cause another wave of outrage regarding the safety measures taken within pro cycling races. Another high-level athlete continued to race despite not being physically fit. This has too often been the case over the past few years, recently Stefan Küng's case at the European Championships was the most notable one specially as the Swiss rider kept racing with a broken helmet.
