Qué corredorazo es Ben O'Connor. Lástima que no haya tenido demasiada suerte en los últimos años. Movimiento fuerte e inteligente para ganar en Jebel Jais y mostrar su candidatura al #UAETour.
Ben O'Connor broke all the schemes of UAE Team Emirates with an attack just over a kilometer from the end of the climb to Jebel Jais in the UAE Tour. The Australian Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale rider ended up taking his second win of the year after the one in Murcia a few days ago,
"It was wonderful, the guys were great today, second win of the year, it's something that's really cool," he commented after the race. The French team had a clear plan of making the final climb hard. With UAE having put their men in front to cancel out attacks throughout the ascent - and Adam Yates having abandoned the race - there was an opportunity to strike hard at the entrance of the final kilometer. A duo-attack with Valentin Paret-Peintre saw them open up the winning gap.
He spoke of the work of his teammate Valentin Paret-Peintre, key to the victory by launching him in the decisive attack: "I thought, why not? I'm not always confident in the sprints at the end so I told him to go full throttle. He almost left my wheel, but I was able to follow him, it was very motivating". The gap was created, and then he had the legs to sustain the attack all the way to the finish.
The abandon of the big favorite due to a crash made him think he couldn't let the opportunity go to waste: "The whole day we went very well, with a headwind at the beginning and with Adam Yates' crash. When you see one of the general classification guys out, it's an opportunity you can't let go to waste. There are still a few stages to go and we'll try to go for the general classification".
