One of the most likeable characters in modern cycling, Biniam Girmay made history at the 2022 Giro d'Italia by becoming the first Black African to win a Grand Tour stage.
Recently, at a UCI World Tour seminar in Lausanne, Switzerland, the 23-year-old Eritrean was a guest of honour. Speaking about his rise from humble beginnings to Grand Tour stage-winning superstar, Girmay gave what was described as an inspiring speech about his experiences with the World Cycling Centre.
Although his 2023 was a somewhat quieter year compared to his 2022 where he also took victory at Gent Wevelgem, Girmay did make his first Tour de France appearance and won a stage at the Tour de Suisse.
