In big news for Danish cycling fans, not just one but two World Tour race will be coming to the nation for the first time ever in 2025.
Going by the name of WorldTour Copenhagen, little is known about the race as of yet. What is known however, is that it will start in Roskilde and end in central Copenhagen according to Ekstra Bladet, and is set to take place around May or June in 2025.
Denmark welcomed the Grand Depart of the Tour de France in 2022 and it's fair to say the occasion was a roaring success. Fans came out in the thousands to welcome the riders, including home heroes such as Jonas Vingegaard, Mads Pedersen and Magnus Cort Nielsen among others.
"I am really looking forward to the fact that we will now have our own WorldTour race on the same level as Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Paris-Roubaix," Lord Mayor of the Municipality of Copenhagen, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen tells Ekstra Bladet, expressing her delight that a women's race will also be included. "Last year it was fantastic to have the Grand Depart. But that was only for our male cyclists. Now we also get the women right up front. I am personally looking forward to seeing Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig in the streets of Copenhagen representing her team."
Who else is the mayor looking forward to? "Mads Pedersen. There is no doubt about that," she says. "And then, of course, a rider like Magnus Cort, who is also fun and exciting to watch on a bike, and who did absolutely terrific during our Grand Depart. But Mads Pedersen is a huge star and deserves to cross the finish line in Copenhagen.
