Alec Segaert was in a very dire situation. The backpack of the young Belgian, containing his international passport, was stolen on the way to the airport. In other words, Segaert could not travel to Glasgow at the moment.
On social media, Segaert's brother and trainer, Loïc, immediately asked the public for help. "Alec's backpack, with international passport, was just stolen on the train in the Brussels zone. Which means that he cannot leave from Brussels for the World Championships. Anyone seen a lost backpack somewhere? Or anyone who can help, pls rtwt!"
The World Championships normally starts next Wednesday for the young Segaert. That's when the time trial for U23s is on the menu. Segaert is one of the big favourites. A few days later, on Saturday, he also starts in the road race for U23 riders.
Luckily, Segaert made his way to Glasgow on Friday. The Belgian U23 team leader received a new passport on Friday afternoon via an urgent procedure. In this way, Segaert arrived to Scotland on Friday evening. He does not have his favorite cycling shoes with him, they were in his stolen backpack. This is reported by Het Nieuwsblad.
