Depends on your point of view, if you look at it as a business, these races are not really profitable. And, isn’t it NICE that sport can still be a success WITHOUT needing a ton of money to motivate the elite?
Also, it may surprise you further but this is about par for the course for all the big races in Flanders, the exception being the Monument, a whopping 50000 :-)
But, women get the same from this year on.
Also, Volta a Catalunya is something like 108k for a full week it seems so if you ask me, pathetic or not, this seems kind of normal as far as prize money goes. What were you comparing to, races in the oil fields of the Middle East?
I am comparing it to professional sports as a whole. Nothing normal about a world class athlete providing a stellar performance for 4 hours and then getting a pittance as a prize for winning. No way to spin this- all the money is made by those with the TV rights.
Yes, and cycling is way better off than most, swimming, running, triathlon, rowing.
But then again, originally sport wasn’t professional or a business. Now that it has evolved, it is subject to the laws of return on investment and cycling is not really a good investment, it remains a minority sport, mostly free to spectators and difficult to relay to the masses on TV successfully for monetizing so little finds it way into the sport that way.
TV rights also complicate the whole issue of women’s pay and prize money as it is based on viewer numbers and not job performance.
Viewer numbers then again are also affected by non-sporting factors such as personalities, provocations and stories but Lance Armstrong aside, few from the cycling world have ever become mainstream enough figures to grow outside the sport.
ASO made half a billion Euros in 2023- There is definitely money in the sport.
False, Groupe Amaury!
ASO had REVENUES of about 200m, difficult to know what profits are but as you probably know from elsewhere in life they usually go towards shareholders or buyouts and not the « employees »
And even if there is money there, ASO is completely something else than Belgian Classics which are local community organised races. ASO « owns » Paris-Roubaix, the Paris marathon, Paris-Dakar and oversees the TdF, that’s about all.
TdF prize money is also way higher than Belgian Classics
Sorry, I just read up and it seems they’ve taken over Liège-Bastogne-Liège too as well as I think la Fleche Wallone.
10th place gets you less than it costs to buy a hospitality ticket to enjoy the day with one of the teams.
But then they get a salary, just like football players who also don’t always get prize money for a match.
