Gravel World Championship win means more to Matej Mohoric than Milano-Sanremo: "Within a few years it will be incredibly difficult to repeat this performance"

Ending his 2023 season in style, Matej Mohoric claimed a terrific win at the Gravel World Championships in Italy. This win, according to the Slovenian himself, means more than any other in his career.

“If people had asked me beforehand what a victory would mean, I would put it below my two stage victories in the Tour de France and my win in Milan-Sanremo,” Mohoric reflects to Rouleur. “But if you ask me today, I would put it above that. Because it made a lot of noise and I honestly think that within a few years it will be incredibly difficult to repeat this performance. So I appreciate it and I'm grateful.”

Mohoric is no stranger to winning world titles, having won the road race in the Juniors, although he was then unable to wear the Rainbow Jersey as he moved up through his development. This time though, he is keen to make sure his new jersey gets its showcase on the gravel in 2024.

“I'm not going to let myself be cheated for a third time,” he laughs. “We are going to put together a good program and see what we can do. Obviously I will continue to ride mainly on the road and those are the main goals. But if we can add some gravel race that don't get in the way of other goals, I will definitely focus on it.”
