Timon Rüegg is not the biggest star of cyclocross peloton, but is certainly working on his reputation with a string of great results, including two top 10s in World Cup. Rüegg's latest result, 13th place in Hulst is not something to be ashamed of either. Actually, it meant that he was able to talk about his year with WielerFlits in an extensive conversation.
"I had some good results, but also a lot of bad luck. In Namur my derailleur broke in the last half lap. My highlight? That was without a doubt Loenhout. There, for the first time in my career, I was able to follow Mathieu van der Poel for two laps. I'm not going to lie: that was one of the best experiences of my entire career. People were shouting so loudly, it was insane."
"Although of course they mainly shouted at Mathieu. Sometimes I hear: 'Let's go Rüegg' or something like that. But the funny thing is: now that I'm riding around as national champion with the Swiss flag on my jersey, quite a lot of spectators think I'm Kevin Kuhn. How often I hear 'Let's go Kuhn' shouted during a cross... Not normal," he laughs. "I clearly still have to work on my fame in Belgium."
And Rüegg is busy with that. Not only did he win four smaller C2 crosses, the Swiss also competed well in the World Cups with top 10 results in Troyes and Val di Sole. "I'm probably in my best shape ever right now. I have a good explanation for that too. I got married in September, and since then I have also been living with my wife."
