The Belgians had overwhelming dominance at the men's under-23 race at the European Championships, and it was Jente Michels who stepped up to take the victory and the new title.
The race started off dry but after 5 minutes conditions dramatically changed. Rain started falling heavily in Pontchâteau and quickly gaps began to appear. Jente Michels and Emiel Verstrynge went clear in the now-technical sections. Verstrynge, like many others, had mishaps in the now very slippery conditions and together with Ward Huybs had to start a chase to Michels from the second lap onwards.
Verstrynge managed to bridge across to the front as Rémi Lelandais chased on in an isolated third place. The Belgian duo continued connected in front until the final lap but ultimately Michels had the best legs in the end. The climbs became tougher with the mud and he was able to make the difference to take the gold medal. Verstrynge and Lelandais complete the podium.
