Mads Pedersen comes in as a big favourite for the world title in Glasgow. Four years ago in Yorkshire in a route that was not too different the Dane broke through and won impressively, and after some incredible consistency the Dane could go on to ride for a second World Championships win.
“Today is going to be a hectic and technical race. In the last 100 kilometers there are about 500 corners, that's going to be special,” Pedersen, one of the many strong cards of the Danish team this Sunday, said to Wielerflits at the start in Edinburgh. “Everyone will lose more and more energy. The door will be constantly open at the back of the peloton.”
Sixth at Milano-Sanremo, third at the Tour of Flanders and fourth at Paris-Roubaix, alongside wins at the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and several other races throughout the season, the Lidl-Trek rider has ridden an impressive season which with no doubt sees him heading to Scotland as a big favourite. The hilly circuit with short climbs is one that suits him very well, and the long distances are perfect for his skillset.
However he focuses more on it's technical feature: “We can indeed call this the World Championships criterium. For me, the ideal scenario will in any case be a sprint with a small group as long as Jasper Philipsen is no longer there. We have seen in the Tour de France that it is difficult to beat him. Who's going to win? Me," he jokes.
