Remco Evenepoel was quite upset yesterday after the team time-trial due to the abrupt change in weather conditions that harmed the team's result, however the current outlook on the overall classification is one that is favourable following the 32-second time gain on Primoz Roglic.
"It was pretty obvious that the last teams had worst weather conditions than the first teams but that's part of the sport, you have to be lucky with what nature gives you," Evenepoel told reporters this morning at the start of Paris-Nice, in the microphone of Cyclingpro.net. "We didn't have luck on our side but we did a good time-trial, the numbers that everyone did were great so it shows that the team is on good form. We were just unlucky with the wet weather conditions, and also the wind [direction] changes."
What Evenepoel was left with are 18 seconds of disadvantage to João Almeida, Jay Vine, Brandon McNulty and Finn Fisher-Black, but 36 of advantage over Primoz Roglic. This makes for a very dynamic situation, but not one that is unfavourable to him he believes: "For us I think we're in quite a good situation for the moment I'm not too far the UAE guys and in front of some others, so it's not really up to us to take control or put some action."
The hilly course will suit him and the summit finish in the steep Mont Brouilly permits time differences, which the Belgian will be eager for taking into consideration the amount of riders that are still ahead of him in the GC. "Looks like it's a nice classic course, it's not a one-day race but it's one of the most important days here this week... Get through today well, we will see what happens..."
