Video footage has revealed the cause for the crash that has caused Arkéa-Samsic's Nacer Bouhanni and Burgos-BH's Manuel Peñalver to crash during today's stage of the Tour of Turkey. Both sprinters were favourites for the stage won by Kaden Groves, but the incident involving a seemingly unaware pedestrian has led to the abandon of both.
The incident happened with just over 60 kilometers to go. Arkéa has had Nairo Quintana crash twice and loose time today, but the Frenchman was the most direct hit as seen in the video below. Despite warning, a pedestrian is seen walking in the road whilst the peloton drew near. No change of trajectory was made, it is not known whether the pedestrian was unaware of what was happening behind him or purposefully stayed on the street.
The accident has taken several other riders out. It is not the first time Bouhanni crashes this season as he suffered a concussion in a training accident in January. The consequences of his fall are not yet known however he was taken to a hospital and an update should be given soon.
