We experienced a tremendous race today at the Wollongong U-23 World Cup with the surprise final victory of the Kazakh Yevgeniy Fedorov after a breakaway that ended up bearing fruit. The Spanish team did not race badly, they kept their best men in the group of favorites and kept their options until the last climb. In fact, Raúl García Pierna came to attack, but without success.
In the last ascent, however, both García Pierna and Pau Miquel ended up losing from the main group. They could not get to play the bronze with the main group and finished in position 20 and 21, almost a minute behind the winner. The strategy worked, but the legs did not work in a very tough World Cup with 2,468 meters of elevation gain and 169.8 kilometers of distance.
The other three members of the Spanish cycling team finished in the following positions: Enekotiz Azparren in 54th, Jokin Murguialday in 66th and Iván Romeo could not finish. This he commented after getting off the bike: "Rainy day without finding good feelings after a hard week. We have given everything but there have been much stronger people. Don't worry, we will keep trying."
