The UCI adopts a resolution in relation to the Olympic Movement’s position on the subject of sanctions taken against Russia and Belarus bit.ly/3Hra5ki
The Russian invasion of Ukraine was a leading topic in 2022 and continues to be to this day. The act of aggression has seen sanctions coming from all corners of the world to both nations including in sports, with the UCI immediately taking action. Currently, there are considerations on how not to harm the riders involved.
The UCI issued a press release in which they reinstated their support to Ukrainian athletes and sanctions on athletes from both nations. These have seen last year the ProTeam Gazprom-Rusvelo, as well as all teams and races from the nations having their UCI license removed. The Netherlands and Australia banned riders from those countries from competing in their territory, however they have continued to compete under a neutral white flag.
For the time being the sanctions continue, however the UCI is evaluating the possibility of them being able to race the World Championships in Glasgow under a specific status. This comes as the athletes "have not gone against the IOC's mission of peace by actively supporting the war in Ukraine" and who have "fully complied with the World Anti-Doping Code and all relevant anti-doping rules."
Although currently both countries lack top sprinters or classics riders, Aleksandr Vlasov is named as a clear figure who has been affected by the sanctions and could in the future be prevented from racing in a race where he could be a large contender.
