I've been looking at Belgian media for about a year (Het Laatste, Nieuwsblad, Sporza) and the Evenepoel coverage has been adulatory and reverent, not critical or exerting pressure. Being the Great Belgian Hope (van Aert's sell-by date seems to have passed), Belgian media inflated Evenepoel's already oversized ego. Turns out that living in a bubble of praise isn't good for dealing with adversity. The 2022 Vuelta win was a lucky one, but instead of seeing it as a unique circumstance, Evenepoel and the Belgian media deluded themselves into thinking greater GT wins lay ahead. Hopefully a less obnoxious Belgian emerges; the real shame is Uijtdebroeks' illness -- this is a rider with a great personality and attitude.

"dominant display in 2023" At best the third-strongest rider last year. The win was a marketing decision. It may turn out to be a Bettiol situation: forever scrutinized and disappointed because of a huge unexpected win.
