With races such as the Tour de France and the Olympic Games Road Race set in his sights for this season, Tom Pidcock has been working hard out on a training camp in Alicante.

On Tuesday, the 24-year-old British rider set a new Strava record on the Coll de Rates climb, taking 18 seconds off the previous best time, which had been set by UAE Team Emirates’ Juan Ayuso only a couple of days prior. Pidcock clearly wants to keep his early-season form under wraps though, as he made the ride private on Strava shortly after it was published.

At 6.5km in length at an average gradient of around 5%, the Coll de Rates is hardly Mont Ventoux or the Passo dello Stelvio, but it’s consistent gradients and short distance makes it very popular among professional riders, as they often ride the climb to test their power output during winter training camps.

This is not the first time that Pidcock has taken a famous record on Strava, as in December 2022 he took the KOM on the Sa Calobra climb in Mallorca, beating former British Hill Climb Champion Ed Laverack’s time by over two minutes.

Pidcock is currently set to start his season at the Volta ao Algarve later this month before heading to Belgium for the opening weekend of the Classics at Omloop het Nieuwsblad.

It's funny that when a riders burst on the scene you either get the impression that they are going to be huge (like pog. vin, rog and ev did) or just very good. Pidcock is certainly a star - and obviously is very good, but is inconsistent. Will he ever emerge to be a future gc contender though?

We know that he can climb in a stage. The problem is with altitude, high mountains and recovery.
