Antonio Tiberi was one of the main podium contenders ahead of the Giro d'Italia but has lost meaningful time up the Santuario di Oropa. He was not fully to blame however, as he suffered two mishaps that completely took him out of the peloton during the descent.
"I had a lot of bad luck. I was in good position when the final climb started to become steeper and the pace went up," Tiberi explained in words shared by Bahraian - Victorious. "But I had a flat tire and then another mechanical problem with my new bike. I did my best to come back and limit the loss, but this was impossible. I lost some time. "
It was not possible to recover after such situation. Tiberi ended up shedding 2:24 minutes to Tadej Pogacar at the finish line but perhaps most importantly for him, 1:57 minutes over his most direct rivals led to the finish by Daniel Martínez.
It is a tough blow for the Italian rider this early in the race. He now sits 26th in the overall classification only after two days of racing; whilst his teammate Damiano Caruso also struggled to match the best on the day and descended to 16th spot.

a flat tire is luck but a mechanical problem with his new bike is incompetence of the team considering that they had hyped him up as a top 3 hopeful

Considering mechanical problem is used for just about anything, I don’t understand why you are so quick and keen to put blame on the team. Chain coming off will be called a mechanical and is more often due to rider error. New bike is untested material, might be manufacturing problem, tolerance deviation, many things.

Maybe you know more but aren’t sharing?

But, even if, the incompetence would nothing whatsoever to do with the hyping, the two are independent or are you saying if they hadn’t hyped him up or announced a top 3, the mechanical would not have been due to team incompetence but would then have been for a different reason?

Classic case of Karma getting mixed up about cause and effect?

I think what you meant to convey was not their incompetence but reason to feel embarrassment?

Also, a flat tire is not always luck, can also be due to incompetence so why are you letting them off for that when you could just as well have added it to put another nail in the coffin?

All the spare bikes are tested and fitted to that particular rider and even tried out by the rider in races or training. A mechanical problem after receiving a "new" spare bike is the fault of the team not the rider especially for a GC rider for whom every second and every watt is important in the era of marginal gains

Yeah thanks but what was the mechanical problem?
