"These are rookie mistakes" - Remco Evenepoel on Lennert van Eetvelt's celebration defeat against Primoz Roglic

Lennert van Eetvelt has had a season with injuries but also with an incredible breakthrough. After winning the UAE Tour and finishing third at the Clásica San Sebastián, the Lotto Dstny was close to beating Primoz Roglic on the first mountain stage of the Vuelta a España. However, an early celebration took it away from him.

The Pico Villuercas proved to be a gruesome climb and after the selection was made, a small group headed towards the finish fighting for the win eventually in a sprint. Van Eetvelt launched first following the attack of Mikel Landa and looked to have it until the very last meters, when he raised his arm, and was overtaken by Primoz Roglic. The Belgian didn't stop pedaling, it's not certain he would've won the stage, but it was by his own admission a bad error.

"If I had been beaten in a different way, it would have been a very good result, but right now it hurts a bit," the Belgian said following the stage. Nevertheless, he did manage to significantly climb up the GC, present himself as a contender for the overall classification and send the message that he's got the legs to take a stage win here.

Compatriot and teammate Victor Campenaerts had a livestream where he talked about the first days of the team at the Vuelta and also of van Eetvelt's mishap, and talked to Remco Evenepoel who had this to say on the matter: "These are rookie mistakes. Now, as long as you stand on the podium in Madrid with your sleeves down, it's fine,"
