The rivalry between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard has defined a generation in the sport of cycling. With the pair having distinctly different styles, both on the bike and off, comparisons between the two are often guaranteed to cause debate amongst fans. In a recent interview, Vingegaard himself addressed the differences between himself and the current world champion.
In conversation with with José De Cauwer for Het Nieuwsblad, Vingegaard is honest about his feelings towards the comparisons with Pogacar. "Tadej has his style, I have mine. But it does bother me sometimes when we are portrayed as 'calculated'," the Dane explains, noting the slightly different view fans have of the Team Visma | Lease a Bike train and the UAE Team Emirates - XRG block. "I understand that it looks like that in the Tour de France and we always say ourselves 'we have a plan'. But sometimes we really do things on intuition."
Vingegaard even has a notable example on hand to call back to, from the 2023 Tour de France. "In the stage to Marie Blanc, it was said in advance that we would only follow and certainly not attack," the two-time Maillot Jaune winner remembers fondly. "But in the end we felt that Pogacar was at his limit and we changed everything."
Another iconic day in recent Grand Tour memory that saw Vingegaard get the better of Pogacar, came with his famous individual time trial win at the 2023 Tour de France on stage 16. A performance that all but officially confirmed the Dane's second successive Maillot Jaune win. "I have never had a better feeling on the bike," recalls Vingegaard. "That day everything went perfectly. Every bend in the descent, every pedal stroke uphill. I thought my power meter was broken."
As De Cauwer notes, this can also be viewed as a day when Vingegaard and Team Visma | Lease a Bike weren't the cold and calculated operators some might view them as. "To put it this way: if your legs hurt and you don't reach your watts, then you can indeed block. But it is also a misconception that in a time trial we write down numbers in advance that we will or will not reach," the experienced Belgian cycling expert assesses. "People sometimes think that we are robots, but a time trial always involves 'feeling'."

I'm with you. Grand Tour GC would be much less interesting with only one of Tadej and Jonas. Right now, no one else comes close.

It’s still interesting when neither are there :-) You know there is always still a thing called imagination? Shame you can’t see the interest in any race if you feel it’s only about who wins or is likely to. On the one hand people enjoy knowing one or both exist, on the other hand they moan when one is partipating. I think we should be looking more at our own attitudes towards expectations from entertainment.

What are you talking about? Of course it’s still interesting when neither is there. I didn’t say anything to contradict that. Weird and baseless accusation and statement. I said Grand Tour GC would be less interesting with only one of them. They perform head and shoulders above the rest but can beat other. If only one was present then the interest in grand tour GC is less since they’d likely dominate the field. Competition is fun. If neither are there then the field is together much closer like at the Vuelta last year. GC was fun the whole way through.
I think you should assess your own attitude and assumptions when communicating with others ;)

I'm sure we have other top riders Mr M. All I was saying that it is a spectacle to watch this pair go head to head in races and grand tours. You always seem to want make more of what is said as though what is said isn't good enough and then off you go into a long discourse telling us about your extended thoughts on the subject?

Mistermaumau 10 March 2025 at 22:01+ 3631

Unless you can ignore the winner to enjoy the rest if the race, hence the comment about using imagination. Easier to do during a race than retrospectively when you’ve discovered someone gets their titles, medals, prize money cancelled and disqualified. Of course, it helps if camera crew look for the action, some channels do better at that than others.

Any two matching riders are a spectacle in any race. Do we have to continually state the obvious by always referring to the same two, even if many strongly disagree and argue they are evenly matched in the races where they meet? Isn’t the point of the internet to enhance and further thought and opinion as opposed to agreeing on a very narrow consensus that kilks conversation?

you're saying this in a comment thread on an article specifically about Tadej and Jonas? The internet is about connection. People can connect without having to go off topic to argue or arguing for its own sake. The internet can indeed be a positive place where people agree on things. For the sake of dissent, you put forward very odd views that are poorly thought out. That's what trolling is. I'll stop feeding the troll

Great reply "Evan", as you say stop feeding him. He always goes off topic to tell you a complete load of crap about himself, sad little man.

Odd is always unpopular. Some people are more interested in understanding and exploring than rehashing what is known, I don’t have any particular desire to be popular or appreciated by the masses. Live with it.

Mistermaumau 11 March 2025 at 14:15+ 3631

How do you plan to stop feeding? By reading me you are already provoking yourself into doing the opposite of what you preach, and by the way, I’d be quite happy if people who don’t feel like it didn’t answer or comment my posts so you’d be doing me a favour.

Shush!

Mistermaumau 11 March 2025 at 14:42+ 3631

The article is ACTUALLY about the perceived unproven style difference between UAE and Visma and not specifically about T vs J but I admit that’s what most people want to limit things to which inevitably dictates what is considered « acceptable «  to discuss by the moral majority here.

Stop assuming you know how people think. Do you not understand how dumb it is to make these sort of assumptions on such a vast scale?
