2021 Tour, not 2022. Merlier and Philipsen both went. Merlier won stage 3 and was clearly the fastest sprinter. Then they immediately changed the lineup for stage 4 with Merlier working leadout for Philipsen. That led to the first win for Cav that year and jasper came in 3rd. Jasper didn't win a single stage that year. Very odd to me that the team neglected the clearly faster rider immediately after winning a stage. Merlier was pretty dominant all of last year from UAE Tour to Euro Championship. The only other bunch sprinter to have a similar level was Milan, and that's continued this year. I can't wait to see those two go head to head at the Tour. Two very different styles for the two current best12-03-2025 23:27

He does that to everyone. Makes wild assumptions and accusations without base for the sake of fighting. Constructs a straw man, attacks it with some ad hominem in there, and thinks it provokes stimulating debate. The guy isn’t worth your time.11-03-2025 16:02

Merlier with Bert leading him out against Milan and his whole sprint train will be such a fun competition. I think Merlier has an edge as he’s shown himself to be incredibly adaptable to the race situation, surf wheels, and improvise. For Milan, if his train nails it, he’s the best. If they don’t, Merlier takes the W. I still don’t get why Alpecin neglected Merlier in favor of Philipsen in ‘21. I recall MVDP even stating that Merlier was fastest in the peloton at that point.11-03-2025 15:52

I know I just said I wouldn't feed the troll, but Tadej used to race cross, and is a former national champion. He's not a "crosser" but to say he'll never do CX is inaccurate (again)10-03-2025 23:17

you're saying this in a comment thread on an article specifically about Tadej and Jonas? The internet is about connection. People can connect without having to go off topic to argue or arguing for its own sake. The internet can indeed be a positive place where people agree on things. For the sake of dissent, you put forward very odd views that are poorly thought out. That's what trolling is. I'll stop feeding the troll10-03-2025 23:15

What are you talking about? Of course it’s still interesting when neither is there. I didn’t say anything to contradict that. Weird and baseless accusation and statement. I said Grand Tour GC would be less interesting with only one of them. They perform head and shoulders above the rest but can beat other. If only one was present then the interest in grand tour GC is less since they’d likely dominate the field. Competition is fun. If neither are there then the field is together much closer like at the Vuelta last year. GC was fun the whole way through. I think you should assess your own attitude and assumptions when communicating with others ;)10-03-2025 16:06

I'm with you. Grand Tour GC would be much less interesting with only one of Tadej and Jonas. Right now, no one else comes close.10-03-2025 03:03

A rider can’t cancel a race. He can protest 9 Or refuse to ride, but the race could’ve continued without him. This whole thing seems silly.06-03-2025 12:31

Agreed! He looked great. I think we'll still see some moments here and there like that, but I think him being consistently among the best is done. I hope I'm wrong!02-03-2025 23:49
