INEOS Grenadiers ended the last day of the second week of the
Giro d'Italia on a high note, as the rival teams didn't try to look for a fragility in
Richard Carapaz' armour, after the race leader had the unfortunate luck of crashing through the stage.
“I fell at the start of the stage but fortunately there were no consequences, I just had to change bike," Carapaz said at the finale of the 15th stage, his first in the pink jersey since the start of the race. He was involved in a crash just six kilometers into the stage, however with very limited consequences, he remounted and got to the peloton where he stayed through the rest of the day.
INEOS Grenadiers controlled the race on a day where Carapaz - surely to his delight - was not tested by his rivals. It was a calm second half of the stage as the race entered the Alps, however it was close to going very wrong early in the day.
"Then the stage went smoothly, the race scenario was good. Initially it was a hard race, afterwards we had everything under control," the Ecuadorian added. Ahead of the rest day he'll have a chance to recover from any possible damage from the fall, and recollect his energies to defend a much-desired lead in the final week.
