Remco Evenepoel has been quite busy these last few weeks, not only with his own cycling career, but also a new cycling-related project that he's been secretly working on. The R.EV Brussels Cycling Academy is a project that will aim on bringing more spotlight onto cycling in Belgium's capital - Brussels.
Evenepoel presented his brand new project at a press conference in the Caerenbergveld sports hall in Dilbeek. "The idea came about in a conversation with my father. I sat in a chair and suddenly I thought: everything I have achieved so far would not come naturally. It would be nice if something more was done for cycling in this region. Brussels is more known for football and also a bit of rugby, rather than cycling," writes Het Nieuwsblad.
"It is also difficult to cycle safely here with all that traffic in and around Brussels. So I thought it was time to equate cycling with ball sports." And so the idea to set up the R.EV Brussels Cycling Academy was born. "It is a social project in which we will support children who do not have the means to get on a bike normally. In collaboration with bicycle brand Specialized, we are going to donate bicycles to them," Evenepoel outlines.
And what is the goal of the project? "The aim of the academy is not that they become a cyclist or female cyclist, but that they discover the bicycle. Our dream is that a young Brussels resident or Brussels resident from the R.EV Brussels Cycling Academy will be selected for the 2030 World Cycling Championships in Brussels."
