Team DSM - Firmenich have shown their new colours at the Tour de France but have so far remained largely away from the spotlight. In the day where the first bunch sprint is expected, Sam Welsford hopes to change that.
“The sprint field here is very strong. You may have eight riders who together are just about the fastest riders in the world," Welsford told Wielerflits. "I think it will be close fights. I think it's really going to come down to having the perfect timing and the perfect run-up. You see in these grand tours that anything can happen in the sprints. It's about giving yourself the best chance to be there and fight for the win.”
Welsford beat on two occasions world-class competition earlier in the year at the Vuelta a San Juan, and then the GP de Criquielion. Ever since he hasn't won, but continued to show good sprinting qualities, finishing second at races such as the Scheldeprijs and ZLM Tour. The Australian won't have a leadout as strong as some of his rivals but individual position will be crucial on such a chaotic sprint.
Welsford already showed his sprint power yesterday when beating the rest of the peloton in the intermediate sprint, perhaps a warning shot for what's to come. Today is the fast men's first opportunity to succeed and he hopes to take full advantage of it. “If you are in the first five or ten in the last three hundred meters, you really have a chance. I think I have the speed, I've shown it all year," he concluded.
