Cycling is a sport where any indication of doping is closely followed and at times seemingly, riders get suspended over legitimate mistakes on their part. This appears to be the case with 21-year old Danish rider Christian Kornum who has been suspended after testing positive to a substance present in Ritalin.
Kornum was second at last year's under-23 national championships road race in Denmark but subsequently tested positive for the substance methylphenidate which is under close control from the Danish Doping authority. This is found in Ritalin, an ADHD medicine but also popular drug amongst students who use it to increase focus and performance in school or university.
Unbenoungst to him, he had consumed something which would give him performance enhancing benefits and was forbidden in pro cycling. The DPA accepted that there was no intention of seeking the performance enhancing benefits from the substance but that it was nevertheless the rider's responsibility and so a two-year suspension (backdated to last July) has been handed. Kornum, a former rider for Team Aalborg - Sparekassen Danmark, will be able to return to racing as early as in 13 months.
