Eight days remain for Remco Evenepoel's return to the peloton. Over the past few months, cycling fans have been spoiled in the spring classics to an absolute series of epic races featuring Tadej Pogacar, Mathieu van der Poel, Mads Pedersen and more. In the shadows, the double Olympic Champion has been preparing for the 2025 season and we'll get to see him next week already.
"I have not been doing any sports for almost three months. It is not the ideal recovery period that a cyclist wants," Evenepoel said at a BKOOL event regarding the timing of his crash back in December.
The Soudal - Quick-Step rider hit the opening door of a postal van whilst out on a training ride close to home in Belgium, and suffered several injuries - specially to his shoulder and hand. This took him off the bike for a whole month, and off the road for almost two.
Hence only in February did Evenepoel truly begin his preparation for the season, and currently he has joined the team's Giro d'Italia block in an altitude camp at Sierra Nevada, Spain, ahead of his first races of the year.
The first of which: Brabantse Pijl. "I'm not going to worry. I'm going into my comeback without pressure, without expectations. If the first races go well, everything will be easier to digest". The Belgian will race the Ardennes and the Tour de Romandie still in the month of April, controlling expectations but likely hoping to show good form and perhaps take a win before beginning his Tour de France-specific preparation in May.
