Remco Evenepoel admits "I was surprised by my sprint" after taking third Clasica San Sebastian victory

Remco Evenepoel is now, together with Marino Lejarreta, the man who has won the Clásica San Sebastián most often, after his third victory. After the race, he explained to the press what the strategy was and how surprised he was with his strength in the final sprint:

"When I escaped we formed a perfect group with Alberto Bettiol, Pello Bilbao and Alexandr Vlasov, perfect. We rode very close together, with perfect cooperation. I set a very high pace in Murgil and saw that only Pello stayed with me. I knew he is fast and I was surprised with my sprint because Pello is one of the fastest climbers in the peloton and I think he had very good legs for the sprint."

The Klasikoa is not just another race for Remco. The reigning world champion is delighted to have started his second last part of the season very strong and is already thinking about next week's World Championship to retain the rainbow jersey:

"I love this race, the fans are amazing, but today they were screaming more for Pello than for me, but I understand, he's a Basque rider, it was very nice to race to the end with him, it's very good for the head and motivation to start the second part of the season like this and go to Glasgow next week."
