After losing significant amounts of time to his GC rivals in the team time trial on stage 3 of Paris-Nice, many thought that Primož z Roglic would go on the offensive on the stage 4 hilltop finish to Mont Brouilly. However, the Slovenian rider failed to gain any time on those around him in the overall standings and was unable to follow the likes of Mattias Skjelmose and Remco Evenepoel in the finale.
Evenepoel took the maximum bonus seconds ahead of Roglič at the intermediate sprint before beating him once again in the uphill sprint to the line to take another two seconds on the road. The BORA-hansgrohe rider now sits 40 seconds behind the Belgian in the fight for the maillot jaune, with a further 30 seconds separating him and the new overall leader Luke Plapp.
Having been the pre-race favourite alongside Evenepoel to take the overall victory, Roglič will now look to the mountaintop finish to Auron on stage 7 and the final stage around Nice as opportunities to overturn his deficit in the general classification.
Speaking to his team after the race, Roglič said “We headed into the day confidently and the guys rode well together. The main thing is that we’re working well as a unit and are ready to go over the next days here. It’s all about the legs, and you’ve got to have the strength there”.
