Portugal voluntarily withdrew from taking part in the Tour de l'Avenir, and a similar pattern is found at the World Championships as the Portuguese management decided to participate in only two categories: the men's Elite and Junior races.
The decision comes as a surprise seeing how Portugal had the availability to have six riders in the main road race, but has only taken four. João Almeida will be leading the charge as an outsider for a possible medal in Wollongong. He will be supported by the Oliveira twins Ivo and Rui who are his teammates, and experienced veteran Nelson Oliveira in the road race.
The Portuguese committee will also race the time-trial, with João Almeida and Nelson Oliveira taking part in the event in search of a strong result.
In the junior ranks young supertalent António Morgado, a recent signing for Hagens Bermans Axeon, will be leading the charge as one of the main contenders. Portugal will not have a team in any of the women's events.
