Phil Bauhaus is not a sprinter with such a big name when comparing to Tim Merlier and Jonathan Milan or such a strong leadout; but he sometimes appears unexpected into great sprint performances. Today was such a case, he came close to winning the final sprint on stage 6
“To be honest, I'm not a fan of a finish like today. We go down at more than 80 kilometers per hour with a whole peloton. That's not necessary, is it?" Bauhaus questions in words to Eurosport. "For me it is more important that everyone has stayed straight than any result.” The result was third at the finish line, although the German rider may have been left hoping for more as he was in a very difficult difficult position next to the barriers. A place on the podium among such competition was still a strong result for the Bahrain - Victorious rider.
“We all take a lot of risks, because every team needs results. And I also know: bunch sprints are always dangerous. But to do it descending," Bauhaus worries. "I had a chainring of 58 teeth. My mechanic said he had never put such a gear on a bike in 26 years. I don't know if we should do it this way.”
The 29-year old managed to beat Milan directly at Tirreno-Adriatico earlier this year, but today he did not have the same legs. Nevertheless, it motivates him ahead of another day that should be for the sprinters: “It was already a tough start to the week for our team, we didn't have the results we wanted yet. Then a third place in the Giro is a good result to build on.”
