Despite the attacks of Miguel Ángel López in the last climbs of the day, a small peloton managed to put on the chase needed to chase back McNulty over the top as the gaps remained small, and López himself suffered from cramps whilst trying to chase down the American.
An alliance was made between Arkéa and BORA to bring McNulty back which was successfully made but UAE didn't loose the head of the race as Alessandro Covi attacked immediately and went on to the race win.
