A week after getting his first win with Cofidis, Bryan Coquard is off to a great start of the season by netting a second stage win, now in front of a different World champion Julian Alaphilippe.

"Of course, I'm delighted to raise my arms for the second time this season. We're getting a taste for it, it's a great feeling" Coquard said after the finish in a team statement.

Cofidis did a masterclass today, by pulling in the main ascent of the day the Col de l'Aire del Masco to drop names like Elia Viviani, Ethan Hayter and Rudy Barbier who could be a threat towards the finale. Finding a collaboration with Quick-Step, they managed to pull back lone escapee Alexis Gougeard, and at the final ascent Pierre-Luc Périchon managed to unintentionally go off the front to put further pressure into Quick-Step who had to burn their weapons earlier than expected to close down the move.

Coquard had strong legs and followed an early surge from Pierre Latour, after opening his sprint no-one had the legs to go through. He added: "We were really good collectively today and we wanted to make up for yesterday. With my teammates, we toughened up the race in order to be able to eliminate as many riders as possible and increase our chances of winning."

"It was a great day, I just had to finish the job!"
