Oier Lazkano has been proclaimed Spanish Road Race champion in San Lorenzo del Escorial after arriving alone at the finish line with a few seconds ahead of Juan Ayuso and his Movistar Team teammate Alex Aranburu.
The rider from Alava, shattered after the effort at the finish line, dedicated his victory to his team, which he considered indispensable for the victory: "The team has been impressive, from the start we knew we had a great team, our idea was to be the majority in all the cuts and we have achieved it, immense gratitude to the whole team, anyone could win and I have won".
Lazkano said after his victory that the last kilometers were very hard and he suffered numerous cramps. Literally, the only thing he wanted was to reach the finish line to stop suffering. Thanks to the work of his Movistar Team teammates, the advantage was enough and he was able to hold on to become Spanish champion:
"We knew we would have to try it, on the climb they attacked from behind and I tried to set the pace, go alone and I got there. In the last 10 k I was in agony, with cramps, it was a struggle to end the suffering as soon as possible".
