EF Education-EasyPost's Georg Steinhauser's 2024 season has not started particularly well. In his very first race day of the year, the German crashed hard at the UAE Tour and has since been diagnosed with a concussion.
"Not quite the start of the season I hoped for," admits the 21-year-old in a post to his official Instagram account. "After I was caught in yesterday's mass crash on the first stage of the the UAE Tour, I ended up with a concussion. That meant - no start for me today!"
Steinhauser was by from the only casualty of the crash that wiped out many of the peloton within a few hundred metres from the line. As such he did manage to cross the line and keep his hopes alive but overnight medical tests ensured he would not continue on.
"I'm all stitched up and after a few days of recovery I'll be back on the bike," he concludes. "Good luck for the next days boys!"
The time-trial was eventually won by Brandon McNulty of UAE Team Emirates with the American also moving into the overall lead of the race in the process.
