Mathieu van der Poel abandoned the Tour de France over a month ago, and unlike most of the riders coming off the race, he has not yet returned to competition as he looks to come back to his full form.
Van der Poel had a strong opening time-trial at the Tour, but then failed to perform at his best level. He abandoned the race during stage 11, and later cited fatigue to be the reason. The Dutchman had a month off the bike in January, severely undermining his start to the season, but he managed to return before expected and had a very strong spring with the win at the Tour des Flandres, Dwars door Vlaanderen and a podium at Milano-Sanremo.
He then quickly recovered and prepared for the Giro d'Italia where he won the opening stage and wore the pink jersey. Although rarely fighting for results, he insisted in finishing the mountainous Giro. Van der Poel then went on to go on altitude training before the Tour de France, but the pile-on of fatigue has seen an outbreak during the Tour.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport's Ciro Scognamiglio, van der Poel does not yet have a return to the peloton scheduled. This comes at a time where the World championships are five weeks away, and most of the riders preparing for Wollongong are racing and preparing for the event. The signs do not look good currently, however it is expected that the Dutchman will at some point over the coming month get back to racing.
