New Danish national coach Michael Morkov "very hopeful" Jonas Vingegaard will be available for future World Championships

A two time Tour de France champion, Jonas Vingegaard is widely regarded as one of the top Grand Tour riders in the peloton today. In one day races however, the Dane is much less of a proven force and thanks in part to this, Vingegaard has not been seen in his national jersey at past World Championships, European Championships or Olympic Games.

With Danish Cycling announcing this Tuesday a change in the national coach, as Michael Morkov retires from racing to take over from Anders Lund, could Vingegaard finally be seen racing in the iconic red and white of his nation? According to Morkov himself, that is certainly the plan for the upcoming seasons.

"As national coach from 2025, but also as a cycling fan, I of course very much hope that Jonas can be available when the World Championships is held in the future," says Morkov in quotes collected by Ekstra Bladet. "I want to have a big focus on making sure that all Danish riders want to ride for the Danish national team and want to bet on European Championships and World Championships. And if Jonas is as good a cyclist in the future as he has been until now, I of course hope that we can select him for the Danish national team."

Last weekend in Zurich, Denmark took to the fight with Mattias Skjelmose as leader. Sadly, that didn't last very long though, with the Lidl-Trek star being forced to abandon early. Mads Pedersen then battled bravely, but couldn't offer any resistance against the all-conquering Tadej Pogacar.

In 2025, the World Championships parcours in the African nation of Rwanda has been described as one of the toughest in the history of the fight for the Rainbow Jersey, with almost 5500 meters of climbing, could it be time for Vingegaard to make his impact in the colours of the Danish national team and renew rivalries with his nemesis Pogacar in a different setting?
