The penultimate day of the Criterium du Dauphiné was a brutal one and Team Visma | Lease a Bike brought the race to Tadej Pogacar. However the Slovenian was able to resist every test and in the end, Jonas Vingegaard had to settle with a second place once again.
Visma had Matteo Jorgenson on the attack in two occasions in the first climbs of the day, and Sepp Kuss was also in the breakaway, creating the looming threat of an attack from the Dane. All of this was in hopes of making the stage as difficult as possible and burn Pogacar out.
The plan was set and executed, but the truth is the World Champion was in another undefeatable day and Vingegaard's strong legs on the day still wouldn't be enough to match the Slovenian.
In the final climb, Pogacar went all-out early on once again, and Vingegaard couldn't match him. “But when he attacked, I tried to follow, but it quickly became clear that I had to slow down,” the Dane said in a post-race interview. The gap didn't grow as dramatically as the day before, but Vingegaard wouldn't be able to close it down.
“I may not have been able to follow, but to be honest I think I did well. I found my own pace and didn’t lose much at the end. I can be happy with how it went. I can see my values and they were very good. Tadej was better again and deserves it.”
Vingegaard seems to be on the right path, but it simultaneously appears as if his chances of winning the Tour depend more on what may happen to Pogacar. “I still hope that this race will help me to improve, so that I am better in the Tour than I am now. But at the moment I have to say: Tadej was the strongest yesterday and today too. Congratulations to him.”

I still don't discount Jonas being able to podium for the Tour, he is improving, he hasn't raced since last March I believe, he will good for the Tour but probably not good enough to beat Tadej. Time will tell.

Yes time will tell. Jonas's training is scheduled so he is believed to peak late in the Tour - but I guess that goes for Tadej too. Jonas needs steeper and longer mountains to be at his best.
The Tour de France will be more exiting than ever

Doesn't get any steeper and longer than what he had in todays stage!

Wrong
Look at etapes 12,14,16,18 and 19 in the coming TdF next month. Steeper and longer.

As you’ve already checked, what about heights?

Tourmalet 2115 but it comes early in the stage

Mont Ventoux 1910, Stage finish

Glandon 1924 comes early in the stage, then the Madeleine 2000 and finally Courchevel 2304, stage finish, in 2023 Tadej lost a lot of time here to Jonas.

La Plagne 2052, stage finish

Tadej lost time on two big mountains in 2022 and 2023 that cost him the Tour, they were both above 2,000 meters. Last year in the Tour he did well on Isola 2000 and the Galibier stage, he won both. Could be he has finally developed to be able to tackle those high mountain climbs, the body does weird things above 2,000 meters when your on the limit.

This coming Tour is going to be hot, fast and tough.

I don’t think anyone would discount Vingegaard podiuming! Of course as of now Pogacar is the clear favourite, but I doubt anyone thinks there’s a bigger challenger than Vingegaard.
