With the Giro d'Italia 2024 coming to an end this Sunday, May 26, the race will end with only two riders having worn the Maglia Rosa: Tadej Pogacar, who has done so since stage 3 and won the overall classification by almost 10 minutes and Jhonatan Narvaez, who was able to wear it on stage 2 after being the only one able to beat the Slovenian on the opening day.
For this reason, and for being one of the most combative riders throughout the Corsa Rosa, the INEOS Grenadiers rider has been drawing a lot of interest in the transfer market, besides being the choice of Ecuador to compete in the Olympic Games in Paris, which caused the anger of the reigning champion of the race, Richard Carapaz.
Narvaez spoke about all this before racing the final stage in Rome of the Giro d'Italia, starting with an overall assessment of what has been his entire Corsa Rosa since his epic win on the first day of the race. "I've suffered but at the same time, I've enjoyed it. The results have been good. Cycling is sometimes very tactical," said Jhonatan Narvaez before explaining what it has meant for him to be the only Maglia Rosa along with Pogacar: "It has been the particularity of this Giro. It was a nice memory and I will really appreciate having been able to wear it.
As mentioned above, his great Giro d'Italia has led to many teams in the WorldTour peloton being interested in signing him, including Tadej Pogacar's own UAE Team Emirates and even Movistar Team. On that, Narvaez has assured that his desire is to remain at INEOS, but that he will certainly see a lot to value. "At the moment my manager has a lot of work. We will wait until the middle of the year to see what happens, but I would like to stay at INEOS, but we will have to wait until the end of August. I hope to get more results until then, as we are still in May. There are more races left and well, let's see what comes next."
Jhonatan Narváez, at the start of stage 2 of the Giro d'Italia 2024, the only day he wore the maglia rosa.
Finally, as expected, Jhonatan Narváez was asked about the controversy that arose with Richard Carapaz as a result of the aforementioned choice of Ecuador to have the INEOS Grenadiers rider represent them in the road cycling event at the Olympic Games.
"My mind is still on the Giro, I'm focused on this. I'm very happy to arrive in Rome with no broken bones. Everything went well, with good results from the team. Tomorrow is Monday, and we'll see what happens next. Even so, we'll both be at the World Championships, but come on, right now I don't even know what the route will be," finished Jhonatan Narváez.
