This week has seen rumours and discussion revolving Movistar Team and a possible partnership with Repsol - one of Europe's, and Spain's most wealthy energy and petrochemical brands - however those seem to have been buried according to sources within the team.
Several Spanish media outlets now quote internal sources within the Spanish team that there were never talks between the two, and that the rumour may have spiraled out of control - specially as petrochemical brands have more and more infiltrated cycling sponsorship.
The talks were of a possible 35-40 million euro budget, which would effectively make the Spanish team the second wealthiest in the pro peloton, only behind INEOS Grenadiers. With the presence of the women's team, which has with Annemiek van Vleuten won all three Grand Tours and the World Championships road race this year, the amount of exposure has been significant throughout 2022.
As Alejandro Valverde retires, the team, now spearheaded by Enric Mas who has had a brilliant end to the season, is on the hunt for new leaders and uses for the budget that is being released. Movistar is keeping most of it's 2022 structure, but has not yet announced any transfer. Fernando Gaviria and Ruben Guerreiro have both been heavily hinted to join the Spanish team.
