Matej Mohoric: "We are living in the golden age of Slovenian cycling"

Matej Mohoric had an incredibly successful year in 2023, highlighted by his Tour de France stage win and Gravel World Championships triumph.

Alongside the likes of Primoz Roglic and Tadej Pogacar, Slovenian cycling has arguably never been in a better place. "We are living in the golden age of Slovenian cycling, so we hope that it lasts as long as possible," Mohoric recently said in quotes collected by RTV SLO after finishing third at the Slovenian Cyclist of the Year Awards.

"We try to invest back in young people and try to help them as much as we can, so that future generations will continue to delight with success," the Bahrain - Victorious star continues. "It is nice to remember at the end of the season of all the successes of each individual, to also appreciate them, so that we will then know how to set new goals for ourselves in the future."

In almost every race now it seems like there is a credible Slovenian challenger. "It is incredible that the three of us are so successful at the same time. Slovenians are a small nation, we are very proud and we also give each other maybe a little energy, drive, motivation or self-confidence that we too can do it. Maybe you say to yourself at the start, but now , but if I'm Slovenian, I'm definitely capable of winning. But the reality is that, unfortunately, golden ages end sooner or later," Mohoric concludes. "But it's not said that they don't start again. These are cycles that repeat themselves. Let's enjoy it while it lasts, and we try as much as possible to work systematically, so that it will be as nice as possible again."
