FDJ Nouvelle-Aquitaine Futuroscope have taken Marta Cavalli to the win at Amstel Gold Race and the wait was not long for another strong win as she has conquered La Flèche Wallone Féminine today, being the fastest up the final climb.
With three laps of the final circuit over the race's most decisive feature - the Mur de Huy - it was a race that was set to be very complicated throughout it's 133 kilometers. Despite the rough circuit, the race was relatively compact until the final lap, although some large groups went up the road but without any major contender.
The peloton managed to reel in the escapee group at the final ascent of the Côte de Cherave, where attacks sparked with van Vleuten, Vollering and Longo Borghini very active in the head of the group. Things calmed down after the summit with just 6 kilometers to go which allowed several riders to get back to the front, it was however a very reduced group that went into the bottom of the Mur de Huy.
Arlenis Sierra pushed the pace towards the climb, and Annemiek van Vleuten took responsability when the ramps got steeper, dragging the survivors along in her wheel. She accelerated in the steepest pitches of the climb, but found a match in Marta Cavalli who followed her, and in a long dragging sprint to the line managed to overtake the Dutch veteran.
After her win at Amstel Gold Race, Cavalli has taken another high level win, beating van Vleuten and Demi Vollering who completed the podium.
