Danny van Poppel has exited the
Tour de France, but not due
to injury or illness, this time, it’s for a joyful reason. The Dutch rider left
the race to be with his partner, Stéphane Kox, who gave birth to their daughter
Bobbie on Wednesday. It marks van Poppel’s first time becoming a father, and
the timing means he will not complete his seventh Tour appearance. The last
time he abandoned the race was more than a decade ago, in 2013 and 2014.
"Dear Bobbie: we are so incredibly proud and happy that
you've come into our lives. Baby girl can't wait for Daddy to come home
today," Kox wrote on Instagram, announcing their daughter’s arrival. The
post quickly drew messages of support from fellow cyclists, including Mathieu
van der Poel, congratulating the new parents.
Van Poppel is the latest to abandon the race, alongside the
likes of Remco Evenepoel and Mathieu van der Poel, but at least his is for a
happy reason.
