Mark Cavendish officially most successful sprinter of all-time; overtaking Mario Cipollini for most career wins with latest triumph at Tour de Hongrie

It's official. Mark Cavendish is now the most successful sprinter in the history of cycling. The latest victory of the 'Manx Missile's legendary career coming on stage 2 of the 2024 Tour de Hongrie.

That stage win, the 164th career victory for Cavendish, takes the Astana Qazaqstan Team sprinter past the great Mario Cipollini's tally of 163. As a result, the now 38-year-old Brit has more wins than any other sprinter in the history of professional cycling.

Later this summer, Cavendish will make one last attempt in the final season of his career to go past another legendary figure in the history of cycling, Eddy Merckx with what would be a record breaking 35th Tour de France stage win. This upcoming challenge was front and centre in Cavendish's mind after his latest stage success.

"The team was just phenomenal," Cavendish said post-stage. "My teammates did a great job and I managed to complete the job with a win. The finish was not easy and the final kilometres with a few corners turned out to be technically challenging. But it all worked out in the end, and I am very happy... This victory will add motivation to all of us before the main goal of the season, the Tour de France."
