Despite taking a win at the Tour of Oman and UAE Tour earlier in the year, Mark Cavendish struggled through Tirreno-Adriatico where he wasn't able to contest the sprint stages. He was under serious pressure at Milano - Torino to perform, and he gave the best response by taking the win.
“I like winning races, it doesn’t matter. For a one-day race you have to be dialed – there’s only one opportunity. I had a solid and motivated team around me and this made the difference. They rode incredibly today, controlled the race and allowed me to remain calm. This is the Wolfpack I know and I’m proud to be part of it," Cavendish said after the finish.
“It’s the first time I’ve raced Milano-Torino and it makes me happy to have it in my palmares now, alongside another big Classic, Milano-Sanremo. Not many sprinters have done that. I knew I had an opportunity to win it today and I am delighted with how things panned out. To see my name on the winners’ list is quite special," he concluded. The flat course of the Italian classic suited his attributes, and with the leadout of his trusted teammate Michael Morkov, the Briton was able to launch his sprint from the front and have enough power to sustain his lead in the peloton and take the stage win.
Cavendish will not be in Milano-Sanremo this weekend and is in question to be at the Tour de France later this year. It is unclear what race will be next in his schedule, however it is likely that he'll be representing the team in one of the upcoming Belgian classics.
