After a rough Tirreno-Adriatico and not being present at Milano-Sanremo, Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team's Mark Cavendish needed good news and he got them as he became the first British rider to win Milano - Torino.
Daniel Viegas (EOLO - Kometa), Juan Diego Alba (Drone Hopper - Androni Giocattoli) and Martin Marcellusi (Bardiani - CSF - Faizanè) set off on the new route of the Italian classic which was this year favourable to the sprinters. With almost 200 kilometers on the route, the trio didn't have favourable chances, however survived until 20 kilometers to go.
Alberto Bettiol launched Ben Healy on the attack with 16 kilometers to go in a slight uphill section, as EF Education lacked a sprinter in the race, and the Irish also rode well but with the furious leadout aproaching the Irish rider was caught with four kilometers to go. Several teams had their face in the wind in the final kilometers but the Quick-Step leadout timed it perfectly, with Michael Morkov coming to the front close to the race finale and having Cavendish in his wheel.
Cavendish launched his sprint in the slight uphill drag to the line and it proved enough to take his third win of the season, holding off Nacer Bouhanni and Alexander Kristoff at the line.
