Alpecin - Fenix took their fifth win of the season today at the
Nokere Koerse. The race ended up heading to a bunch sprint and pre-race favourite
Tim Merlier managed to take the win.
"There was so much ambiance on the way, it was like a World Cup. If everyone wants you to win and you also cross the finish line first, that's great," Merlier said after the finish. "Yesterday I had looked at some images from previous editions. When Bouhanni won here, I saw that it also went from afar. That was important at this finish."
After the race was controlled and a bunch sprint became the inevitable scenario for the race to finish, Merlier was the big favourite. The Belgian did not fail to fulfill his expectations and took a dominant win atop the Nokereberg after launching his sprint early.
"In that slight bend to the left I was the first to start. If I could keep my wattages after that, I knew that not many would be able to pass me. There was still a small tap in my chain, so I didn't dare to change gears anymore . I was quite big, but luckily it was enough." he concluded.
It was indeed the best strategy as Pascal Ackermann who followed him to the climb was blocked just behind, loosing speed. Merlier hit the final straight in first place and managed to carry his speed all the way to the finish. This was his second win of the season, however in the coming weeks Merlier will have more chances to take significant triumphs. His next outing will be at the Bredene Koksijde Classic in Friday.
