A dramatic end to the Prueba Villafranca, the head of the race crashed in the final meters, and Marc Hirschi took advantage of that to take the win in the Basque classic.
The very rainy day in the Basque Country provided for very complicated conditions for the riders. It also made the race more selective and on the hilly course. Only a few riders reached the final hilltop that summited with 10 kilometers to go.
From there UAE played with their numbers with Marc Hirschi going on the attack, then Juan Ayuso. Ayuso got a small gap over the summit but Spanish champion Oier Lazkano closed it down in the descent. However inside the final kilometer already both crashed out in a corner dramatically.
In the end Marc Hirschi took the win as he came from a chasing group, brought by Ben Healy who finished second. Ayuso got back on his bike to still ride to third place.
