Team Visma | Lease a Bike have confirmed that Wilco
Kelderman will remain with the squad through the end of the 2027 season,
extending the 34-year-old’s contract by another two years. The Dutch climber,
who joined the team in 2023 after a stint at BORA, has long been valued for his
consistency in Grand Tours. Kelderman said he is eager to continue contributing
both as a leader and a key support rider in the team’s major objectives.
“I want to stay part of the team that fights for the big
wins while also continuing to pursue my own ambitions,” Kelderman said in a
team statement. “I feel at home in this team: with the riders, the staff, and
the fans. I enjoy working with everyone, and this team really suits me. I want
to get the most out of my career and keep looking for ways to improve."
Kelderman has built a strong résumé over the years,
including podium finishes at the Giro d’Italia (third in 2020), a top-five at
the Tour de France (fifth in 2021), and a fourth-place finish at the Vuelta in
2017. Though his role has shifted from leadership to support in recent seasons,
he still sees room for personal goals.
“My role has changed a bit in recent years, and I try to
support and help the younger riders on the team as well. At the same time, I
want to remain part of the squad that fights for big victories, whether in the
Tour or other Grand Tours, in a supporting role. And I still want to pursue my
own ambitions at certain moments as well.”
Team sports director Grischa Niermann praised Kelderman’s
value to the team. “Wilco is a great person and rider who has built an
impressive palmarès. In Grand Tours, he is still among the best climbers in the
world. Over the years, his role has evolved, and he’s always shown great
dedication to supporting his team leaders. All of these are reasons why we
wanted to keep him on board longer. We're very happy that he feels the same
way. Together, we believe there are still many great years ahead for him.”
