Lorena Wiebes: "I am proud and happy that I won, It became a very long sprint"

Lorena Wiebes won the bunch sprint against Elisa Balsamo at the European Cycling Championships in Munich.

"I am proud and happy that I won. We rode really strong as a team," said Wiebes. The final kilometers saw some thrilling sprints as Elisa Balsamo tried to take the lead. Wiebes and her teammates followed behind Italian riders, but Wiebes jumped in the final 300 meters, surprised Balsamo, and eventually took the victory."It became a very long sprint," Wiebes said.

She did not forget to give credit to her teammates and acknowledge their hard work in the race. "We raced very well as a team. I am very happy and proud that I could finish, especially because the team worked so hard for me. Then it was also so close. Today I didn't realize I had won either,” said Wiebes.

Wiebes admitted she was under pressure but did not give up. "By being a finishing star with Team DSM, I have of course been in situations like this many times. I just tried to stay calm," Wiebes concluded.
